Our goal is to prepare wrestlers for success on and off the mat, instilling values of discipline, sportsmanship, and perseverance.
Athlete Development Approach
1. Foundational Skill Building
We focus on teaching fundamental techniques across folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling. Early training emphasizes movement literacy, sportsmanship, and resilience, laying the groundwork for future success.
2. Competitive Opportunities
MT-USAW offers a comprehensive competition calendar, including local tournaments, the MTUSAW Belt Series, regional qualifiers, and national-level events like the USMC/USAW Nationals in Fargo. Participation in these events provides athletes with exposure to elite competition and diverse wrestling styles.
3. National Team Pathway
Athletes who place in the top three at the state championships are eligible for the U16 and Junior National Teams. These teams receive additional training, travel support, and access to national-level duals, camps, and clinics.
4. Development Camps and Clinics
Through summer training camps, specialized clinics, and partnerships with collegiate wrestlers and coaches, MT-USAW provides continuous learning opportunities. These events focus on refining technique, building physical conditioning, and enhancing mental toughness.
5. Mentorship and Leadership
Older wrestlers are encouraged to serve as mentors to younger athletes, promoting a culture of leadership and accountability. Many national team athletes also give back by assisting in local clubs and camps.
6. Community and Character
MT-USAW instills values of integrity, respect, and perseverance. Beyond the mat, the organization promotes academic achievement and community service, especially through awards like the Gordon Smith Scholarship.
